I'm in W Midlands/SE Staffordshire border. You are right NO LADYBIRDS at all.  Mags

I suppose it could be a youngster just getting the hang of life and self care.

I don't think there is anything you can do for it, other than make sure you don't use slug/snail pellets, even if they say wildlife friendly!   And try to keep your cats inside when it is around.  Fingers Crossed.  Mags

black opal tomato plant

Posted: 25/05/2015 at 15:18

I had Black Opal last year.

SIDE SHOOTS:  I left 2 on, which both went on to produce fruit on them as well as the main stem.

DROOPY LEAVES and DISCOLOURED LEAVES:  Mine did that. It seems to be the way they are.

In all, the plant didn't grow much and didn't produce much fruit. Not that it mattered because I didn't like them much. I preferred them roasted to raw.

Good luck everyone!  Hope you all get better results and like them better than I did.

'Dead' soil

Posted: 22/05/2015 at 16:37

Thanks for your reply.  Both packets of seed came free with a magazine. They are T&M seed or Fothergills seed.  I want the all the plants for this year only. The Rudbeckias I sowed this year and the Cant Bells last year.  I will use this Garden centre compost now, and horse manure in the autumn.  Mags

'Dead' soil

I've just pulled up the wallflowers and the soil is very dry and not a worm to be seen.  I intend to plant Rudbeckia  and Canterbury Bells plants in the empty border. Would it be helpful if I dig in a bag of Farmyard Manure that I bought from the Garden Centre?   Thank you for any advice, Mags

cleaning bird feeders

Haha Mrac, I carelessly used boiling water on a plastic feeder. It went out of shape and couldn't be re-assembled!   Thanks everyone, for your replies.

YES. everyone, beware of feeders that cannot be taken completely apart for cleaning.

cleaning bird feeders

Edd,  I wondered about bleach.  Ok, just a few drop to a bowl of hot sudsy water then rinse very well and leave to dry (I always do anyway).  Thanks very much, Mags

cleaning bird feeders

I keep hearing that we should use a sterilising/antiseptic wash for seed feeders and bird tables.  Is this correct?   What should I use - are any household products ok to use?  I don 't want to use anything harmful. I've always used hot water with a squirt of washing up liquid (the sort that is kind to my hands!)  and cleaned them regularly.  Thank you, Mags
