only leaves

Posted: 12/01/2015 at 13:01

Welshonion, I know they grow at different rates but on any I've had before, once they start growing leaves then they won't grow a flower! I feel I need to do something to force it!  And yes, I know that if there is no flower in there then nothing I do will help.  .  I'm going to repot it this afternoon just to see. I've also heard that storing them near apples will stop them flowering - may Morrisons where it came from had then too near apples and there is a flower in there somewhere!   Mags   PS my other 2 came from a garden centre.

Hum........thanks Dove.

I will repot it into almost dry compost and put it in the cool garage.  I know from experience that it is now unlikely to flower if I do nothing, so it's worth trying.  Fingers Crossed!  Mags

only leaves

The amaryllis I bought a week before Christmas seems to be producing only leaves - 2 so far.  Is there anything I can do to it to persuade it to flower?      I have 2 more amaryllis bulbs both with lovely strong flower stems growing.  They are all being grown together, in  line of pots, so all getting the same treatment.  Many thanks, Mags

squirrels and their cleverness

What worked for me is that I bought a squirrel feeder, attached it to the fence  and filled it with the cheapest peanuts I can find.  The squirrels visit that and leave the bird feeders alone.   Mags

Book Lovers and Library Users

I am in the library 2 or 3 times a week  I know it is paid for in our council tax, but I would pay a personal  annual charge, direct to Staffordshire Library Service to keep the service.  I am currently quite happy to pay a 25 charge for each book  reserve.  As a pensioner with lots of time I get through a lot of books!

As for charity shops: I wonder where    gets books for 10p?  The charity shop where I volunteer charges £1.49 per paperback!   Anyway, you can't request specific titles in a charity shop.    Mags

I've had another look at images.  That's not it.  The plant I want has a panicle growing up from the base on a stalk.  The acorus calamus shows a flower then a seed head growing out of a leaf.  Mags

I think that might be it, nut cutlet.  The plant I am thinking about had dark brown panicles.  I guess this acorus calamus goes brown.   But it is described as having a fragrance of cinnamon, nutmeg and something else spicy which is what I remember. Wikki says it has 'an aphrodisiac scent' - yes- it does!      Thank you very, very much.  Mags

Sorry - photo impossible.  I had the plant 5 or 6 years ago and threw it out the following March when I thought it had died. Silly me for being so hasty! I don't know what came over me to do that. I didn't know anything about patience then.  Mags
