How do I get rid of it

Posted: 12/03/2014 at 17:35

Hi I have ground elder coming in large swathes through the lawn, we mowed it down at the weekend and have now dug a few new shoots out of the border nearest to the outbreak - thought about spraying it but was worried about killing the lawn as the area its in is around 2 meters - it wasn't there last summer so maybe the little birdies have dropped a seed or two and with all the wet we have had? Any ideas how to get rid of it would be appreciated also if I just keep mowing it will it replace the lawn?

The first one I've seen this year - 2014

uncovered a toad we have no water nearby so don't know why he is here or how he got here (could he have been dropped by a bird) - anyway a welcome addition to munch on my slugs long may he stay

Many thanks for the advice going with the native hedging - looks like the mix will be Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Hazel, Beech, Wild Rose, Holly, Guelder Rose and Dog Rose. Just a shame we wont be able to see it as it will be behind the fence but hopefully will encourage more wildlife.

Hi we have just had a new 6ft fence put up the outer side faces a large field area used as a shortcut and we are looking to plant a hedge along it.

I have been thinking of Hawthorn but would like to put a reasonably fast growing evergreen in for the birds to shelter in has anyone any good ideas? Also do you plant 2 or 3 deep as I would like it to eventually be quite thick...

Last year I had what looked like mutant giant slugs striped and really disgusting - collected them up in a bucket of salted water with my kitchen burger tongs (must add don't use them in the kitchen anymore) and then every couple of days poured them down the drain in the road...... they were the biggest I have ever seen...

Advice would be greatfully appreciated

Many thanks Both just stuck my finger in and they are a little dry they are also sprouting new shoots from the base - am I right in thinking not to trim the shoots until I have replanted them and trimming these a month or so later?

Edd I am going to replant into large pots and was going to put the pots onto one of those plant saucers but prefer the suggestion from Dove of plant feet - should I put a tube into them to water directly in or just water directly onto the top?

Advice would be greatfully appreciated

Many thanks for everyone's help - just planted the Rosemary with a lot of grit and removed the fleece and hopefully weather permitting on Saturday will get the others in....

Dove mentions Bay Trees I bought 2 large bargain trees to stand by the front door at the same sell off,  of plants at the end of January - I have them standing in terracotta pots ready to replant them. They don't receive any rain or wind there and I am watering them weekly what soil mixture do you think will be best to re-plant them with? They are around 5 feet tall and appear really healthy but worried about them drying out. Also wondered as they are in pots do I put a pipe in to pour water in directly once replanted?

Advice would be greatfully appreciated

Thanks Dove that's great help it is going in my proposed new herb garden which isn't on a slope so if I give it extra grit should that be ok?
