Bulb Confusion

Posted: 16/10/2013 at 18:08

Hello - I am getting a little confused when bulbs should be planted - I was under the impression that it was always best in mid October? I have ordered bulbs from Thompson Morgan and GW and they are due to arrive sometime in November (both lots were ordered in September and I was under the impression they would arrive this month) - when emailing Thompson Morgan asking for a more specific date I was informed sharply by them that bulbs are planted late November - this has made me more than slightly confused they are narcissus and tulips from GW am I going mad should it be this month and if planted so late will they survive or if the snow arrives as predicted will they rot as I've left it so late - sorry to go on so much but I genuinely am confused......

'Snowball Shrub'

Posted: 14/10/2013 at 17:14

Hello - I have just purchased the Viburnum opulus which I believe is the Snowball Shrub. I have admired this from afar before and hope to try and train it to become more like a tree than a shrub - wonder if some kind soul can advise when do I start to trim it - I have read that they can grow upto 3m tall and wide but its the height I am after.

Hi sorry for the late reply and thanks for the help - the soil is really poor and only gets the sun for a couple of hours early morning and the lavender is in the sun for the most of the morning. The soil is really sandy, gritty and dry I did horse manure it at the beginning of the year believing it may help. All through the summer I kept it well watered the wisteria is doing well though - I am wondering Verdun if you could advise on an alternative for dry shade with a blue and white colour - thanks again

We are in Thame and they are a fantastic daily site - not that we should but occasionally put out the odd chicken carcass in winter and its amazing to sit and watch this beautiful bird come down to collect its supper

Border Ideas

Hi I wonder if someone can advise I have a front border with poor soil conditions and would like an idea what will thrive and survive. Last summer I planted a Wisteria which is coming on leaps and bounds but below I planted at the same time as the Wisteria, 15 Schizostylis Pink Princesses and they are not flowering and although watered through the summer the leaves and growth are really poor. I was under the impression these would thrive in poor soil conditions. The sun arrives early morning only, also I had planted between them Geranium Kashmir White which were green last year with no flowers and did not come through again at all this year. The front of the border is thriving with lavender but as this side of the border is edged in grass I would not want to plant lavender as mowing would damage the flowers. The back of the border is the garage wall. Any thoughts would be gratefully received - a blue and white theme is something that appeals as well.

Many thanks

Waterbutt I will email our local beekeeping association as tonight there are a few more fatalities...... I have never seen so many dead bees before in the garden before we are quite rural. Maybe it is to do with their short lifespan..
