Penstemon

Posted: 05/04/2016 at 09:38

Last year I took several cuttings from a Penstemon.  They rooted successfully and over-wintered well in the greenhouse, together with the parent plant.  During the warm spell in early March I brought them all out and put them in a sheltered spot to harden off. The result is there's a bit of die back on the parent plant and its stems look healthy, but the leaves on all the cuttings turned brown and the stems look to be dying back.  They all have a good root system, though.  Have I lost them?

Just had my first successful flowering of Allium Christophii and their seed heads are now sitting beautifully in vases in the house.  The bulbs are still in their terracotta pot - should I lift them for drying before replanting in autumn?

Thanks, Scroggin ... I think I may give up on the caulis, then!  Will have a go at using the leaves as greens, but I imagine they'll be a little on the tough side!

Savoys and Cauliflower

This is my first year growing savoys and cauliflower.  They look very healthy but are very tall, with huge leaves and, so far, no sign of a heart or a curd.  Is all the energy going into the outer leaves?  Should I take some of them off?  If so, I would be left with something of a stem which might rock in the wind, and limited means of earthing them up. Any advice very welcome! Thanks.

Just caught up with this thread - didn't realise how lengthy the discussion had been!

2015 progress to date .... sowed Tumbling Tom (Red and Yellow), Ailsa Craig and Rainbow in early April in 3" pots in windowsill propagators.  All germinated, then put pots into home made light boxes made from shoe boxes with high backboards and covered in tinfoil.  All very happy on the windowsills.  Then (trying to avoid them getting leggy) I potted on to 5" pots in lightboxes and still indoors as we've had cold nights.  Now all in greenhouse, looking much happier than any of last year's lot - ready for final potting on soon.  Oh, the promise!!  Time will tell ...

Thanks Pansyface ... that's what my common sense was telling me - but it's always nice to have it backed up!

Crab Apple

I have a 3 year old crab apple 'John Downie' and have just noticed that the leader has died back by about 6".  I'm going to need to prune that bit out anyway but as there are several pairs of leaves lower down I'm wondering if I could take it further, to create a goblet shape - and how far down is it safe to go, given that the leaves are opening now.  Any help much appreciated!
