It does look like white lilac - but my white lilac doesn't have any scent.

Pieris in shade

I have pieris growing in my front garden and it's not in acid soil and it does very well.   Mine is in almost full sun and it seems to be quite happy there.  Maybe in acid soil it would do better - i don't know - but i don't believe acid soil is absolutely essential.

figrat - I've got ordinary garden soil.  Nothing special about it - can be quite heavy and clay-ey in places.

Thanks blairs - but I've tried them in the ground several times before with no luck!

Maybe they just don't like me..............!

Thanks folks for all the replies.  I'll try putting them in pots with compost, try to keep them warm and wait to see what happens.

Fingers crossed!  If it doesn't work this time, I'll just give up and search for something else to become fixated on..................!

Crocosmia

I've just ordered some mixed crocosmia bulbs, but I've done that several times before and nothing came up.  They will be delivered by the end of April.

Would it be feasible to plant them in pots just so that I can make sure to water them and nurse them along?  If I did, should I use compost or just garden soil?

I've planted crocosmia bulbs before, planted an actual growing plant, planted bulbs from my sister's garden (which grew like mad for her) and never had any luck with any of my efforts.

I'd love to have them in the garden - does anybody know a foolproof way - please???  I just have ordinary garden soil.

Growing seeds

Thanks all - crikey I'm being inundated with responses!  Some really good ideas there for me to work on.  And there's a Lidl close to me, so I'll have a look there for seeds.

I'm always tempted at this time of year to get started but I know from past experience buying even something like plug plants too early is not a good idea - I have to keep reminding myself to have patience!

Now all I have to do is find a free windowsill.....!

Is there any way I can grow plants from seed without a greenhouse, shed or propagator?   Money is very tight and for instance I would like to grow some erigeron but I can't see how I can do it though it would be much cheaper than buying plants.

I have a back garden full of very old shrubs that I would love to get rid of - half of them I don't even know what they are - and in the summer everything is just 40 shades of green - I would love some colour but money is in short supply.

Any ideas anybody please?

Tx,

Una.

This year I started using slug pellets on Valentine's Day and made sure to use them on a regular basis and it really seemed to help - I don't think I gave them a chance to breed.  So will do the same next year.
