Talkback: Feeding garden birds

Posted: 16/10/2014 at 22:28

I love my birds and put a niger feeder for the finches. it gets well used but the downside is the fallen seed then seeds in my lawn creating a mat of short dense shoots which seem to kill the lawn, any ideas how to overcome this. I don't want to stop feeding this as there have been goldfinches this year. Appreciate any advice please.

I have a trickle waterfall which I run sometimes, but unfortunately the collecting basins are a bit leaky and I'm not sure how to make them watertight without polluting the water?

I love everything about my pond, there's always something interesting happening and always a bitto do clearing the blanket weed which is worse when the sun has warmed up the water. Do you use barley straw or use a special barley "chemical" ? Love exchanging ideas.

What's the best way to shade a greenhouse?

Posted: 24/10/2013 at 21:19

I know the winter is here now, but last summer I was recording temperatures up to 52C in my greenhouse, Death Valley!. It's a new greenhouse with auto vents and I do leave the door open and damp down but it doesn't seem to really lower the temperature. Any other shading from the inside ideas guys? It is a Hartley greenhouse if that helps. I shall be growing cacti next year is so.

Talkback: How to take lavender cuttings

Suggest using the soft wood cutting technique, then leaving them around 8 weeks  in a storageage  type see thru box with a lid that you can check on regularly. Water moderately leave in a cool shady place outside, and then pull one gently and if you feel a resistance it may have rooted. The secret may be to take loads so that one or two can be sacrificed. Suggest gritty well driaining  compost and do not overwater. Would be interested to hear any success.
