Rejuvenating thyme

Sounds like I should try to bury the older plant deeper into the soil and take cuttings. I am surprised about the advice against a shallow pot as it was given to me by the grower. The pot is about 15cm high and 25 across. The older one seems to have perked up quite a lot since moving into this one.

The cuttings just plant them in compost with a fair amount of sand in it?

Blind Fritillaria imperialis

I have a red fritallaria imperialis that has done well ever since I planted it. This year it shot up with the same vigour as ever but I noticed that the buds instead of going from green to red just went papery and grey. They seem to have just withered away. The plant looks healthy and is even taller than usual. Did spot some lilly beetles on it last year but nothing else out of the ordinary. Could it be frost but I don't think we have had any in Bristol this spring.

What is the best way of giving thyme back some spring in its steps? I have two plants in a shallow terracotta pot with quite a lot of grit as recommended by Jekka's herbfarm. One plant is quite woody and produces some new shoots but isn't really doing much. The other does sprout new leaves and soft branches but I fear every time I need some I will kill it. Should I trim them back heavily or can I try to layer some of the branches thus creating new new plants in the pot or is just taking cuttings a better idea?

I'm suspecting that I might have killed them. They are not looking happy there they are (read wilting) and on top of everything it is really cold here now.

I assume you have a window there. Don't really have a cold light place to put it. Strangely enough the ones my father's wife has are not given this kind of treatment.

I'll see how it goes and report back.

Last year one of mine survived when I planted them outdoors in May (I think). It never managed to produce a single fruit. Probably due to the horrible summer we had.

The reason I mentioned both is that they need time at lowish temperature and that seems what this window provides at least for the epiphyllum so I thought the temperature would benefact both. The window is quite low so it gets very shifting natural light from long in the summer to short in winter which should suite them both I thought. Might move the clivia to the bedroom and see if it does better there.

I'm surprised at the comment about water, I thought too much water would lead to stunted flowers. Could a restrictive water regime be the problem?

Was going to say I'll try to bury them later on. If it fails I'll report back and start again with the seeds I have left.

They are a outdoor heirloom variety that can go out in Mayish the pack says. I probably start hardying them off in April as my garden is walled in. Don't thing there has been any frost here yet. My nasturtiums are still alive from last year.

I suspect I have jumped the gun a bit with these (Early Summer Crookneck) so my question to you are:

Can you do the same to courgettes as to tomatoes? replant them up to the first leaves (or should that be true leaves)?
