Cowslip dying?

Posted: 10/05/2014 at 17:00

My red one came from a nursery who sold it with a lable saying Primula Veris Orange with Yellow.

To me it looks like a cowslip but from the photos I have seen its really had to tell the difference. Sadly  I have no photos of my red one only one I found via google.

The yellow type I have http://whisperingearth.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/cowslip.jpg

red type https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3212/4554645585_4a1021edc0_z.jpg

This is to my knowledge a native cowslip (Primula Veris) and the other is a red variety of it.

I had to dig some of mine out as they where blocking everything else as they were at the front of the border. They seems to  have recovered from the shock and stated to shoot leaves again after dying down totally.

Ha ha ha. You can never have too many weapons against the dreaded slug!

Cowslip dying?

It is. There is a red (ok orangy red) variety of it. We used to have the red ones growing amongst the yellow ones at my mother summerhouse in Sweden (they are probably there but I haven't been at the right time of year for years) I think it is a natural mutation rather than a new hybrid as we have had them in Sweden naturally for decades.

I have several ones that I got as seeds from a colleague who had collected them from known strains in her garden. None of the has her colours but that was expected. I am now on tenterhooks to see if the really odd one has come back. It was not as vigourus as the other ones but had a very weird flower. Instead of the bell shape they usually have it had the side petals but instead of the main flower heads it had really small petals like a wreaf/crown. If it does it again I'll post a photo.

The others grow like monsters in the garden. Almost taking over the place.

I planted some sunflowers a couple of weeks ago (I kinda went overboard and planted tons of seeds mid April probably too early...) I have had two come up but before I even was able to see them and feel pleased with myself something snipped the growl leaves off. I have sprinkled the garden and the puts liberally with blue organic slug pellets and they are on a patio so I think it might be a feathery foe. What do you lot do to protect them? Last year I had only one that had self seeded in a crack next to the house.

Mine has never fully died down and tends to start flowering again in the autumn. My soil is not too heavy  (I have no clue to be honest). It is a built up border that was put in before I moved in so might just be garden compost. Have planted a yellow and a red one in a different part of the garden and hope they do better. I suspect it has just run out of steam. My plan was to get it to cross with the native primroses and primulas next to it which seems to do well (and die down)

The courgettes are not doing to well. The one I buried a bit has died. One has been blown about so much that it has almost broken (toothpick and tape seems to have sort this. Just spotted this happened to a second one but will deal with that when the wind has calmed down. the final is ok but leggy.

Have planted too more seeds.

They look rather stunning and can be quite long according to google. Bought them on a whim at a seed fair. I planted the seeds in pots outdoors some weeks ago so I think they are ok to be outdoors. Think the seller's, who is Somerset beaded, package didn't say greenhouse. That would have stopped me.
