Plant IDing (or have I totally lost it)

Posted: 21/05/2014 at 20:03

Alas the clematis that I stole the cutting from is no more. It was a massive one covering a tree in lovely big flowers. I think it died this winter or someone cut it back at the roots.

Find it very weird that they are so different. Leaves and stems are different but the flower is very very peony. On the good side, it means I wont have to ponder where the hell to plant the climber!

It seems like a beautiful marriage of bad memory and wilco cocking up.

The flower looks like a peony to me but the leaves are different. The rough peony leaves are five leaved (three at the top and then a double on the sides). The peony from Wilco has a rosette of three times three leaves and red stems. I have no memory of planting a piece of the peony in a pot but I might have.

I planted in a pot a cutting of a clematis that I used to pass on my way to the gym. It had lovely big purple/blue flowers some years ago. I thought it wouldn't survive but it came back the next year and the year after that. This year it produced a bud to my great delight. The bud swelled and swelled and the flower looks like this.

That to me looks more like a peony.

I have a peony that doesn't flower yet and the leaves are very different so they cant be the same.

 Any ideas what this is?

planting mirabilis jalapa tubers

Thanks. My garden is too small for such delights as a greenhouse of any kind. I'd love one but not enough space.

How do you sow them? Just cover them up?

When can you expect the tubers to spring back to life again. The ones I had seems to have survived winter well have been back in the soil two weeks or so but no life from them. I am probably a bit impatient as I am eyeing up the pots for something else if they don't come back to life soon.

(had a littel dig about and the tuber looked fine but no growth.)

New worms for wormery

Posted: 18/05/2014 at 15:20

The wormery has picked up since I posted this but I still have problem with paper content. I have added newspaper and cardboard boxes to it but what seems to happen is that the paper just clumps together and doesn't break down very well. In the end it tends to be like fragments of paper that doesn't break down. I don't have  shredder so I have to tear the newspaper by hand into fine strips and pieces. Is this a result of too big pieces or of too wet wormery? It doesn't smell bad nor feel to wet to the touch.

Morning glory seedlings dying

I am soooo more reckless than that I am afraid. Mine was planted outside for the start. Think my early planting of tomatoes has made them stunted...

I thought it would be water. Just thinking that taking them in now might shock them more as the are used to be outside all the time. Might move them somewhere more sheltered Like the outside windowsill at the front. Quite a lot of sun in a stairwell.

i think I need to get a coldframe or stop going over boards with seeds in late April.

Morning glory seedlings dying

Hi,

I planted some morning glory seeds a couple of weeks ago and then germinated nicely outdoors so I didn't think more about it. I then noticed that the leaves went yellowy but didn't think that was to worry about. Today two of them have shrivel up (the stems are still sturdy) and the other look like they are going the same way. Could it be the cold weather we have had or the rain?
