The "varigated" conifer looks more like it has dying/frozen shoots to me!

The way wild garlic spreads, I doubt if someone picking a few leaves will do any harm!

Hi Steve, have a look at this Taylor's Clematis page, it seems that this clematis should be no problem in a container, but you would have to put some kind of trellis on the wall for it to cling to. You could also contact them and as for more advice.

Is this area ready for planting

I don't know what anyone else thinks, but it looks great and I would plant, plant, plant! Taller things at the back, medium in the middle, aubrietas and similar to hang over the stones would look fantastic. You've done so well with weeding, and I think any that come up now should be easy to remove. There will always be some weeds, that's life!
