Hi All & thank you for your replies...

Bob my soil is quite light and sandy and very well drained where I am thinking of putting at least 2 of the plants.

Steve, never thought of that so thanks for your suggestion

Invicta2, we have lived her for 20 years and it was new build when we moved here. Prior to that it was a hospital grounds so no veggies grown here.

Fairygirl & Scott,, think I'll bite the bullet and do as you both suggest.

Soil types

I have always believed my soil to be neutral so have always had my Rhodies, Pieris, camellia etc in pots. Out and about lately I've noticed that many of the gardens around here have said acid loving plants in the gardens & not in pots.

Last year my neighbour planted a beautiful pieris and he also has a lovely rhodie in his garden too both of which look pretty healthy to me.

I have just done another soil test using a new testing kit and yep it's showing I have neutral soil! I'd love to have my plants in the ground and out of their pot but I'm a bit reluctant to put them in to see how they do because I'd hate to loose them.

Am I missing something really obvious here?

Ah OK I'll keep a close eye on them then to make sure they don't start taking over

Thank you for your replies

Do Polemonium self seed? I have a couple of these in my garden and I've noticed, what look like, lots of seedlings dotted around the plant. If they are seedlings (they are quite small at the moment) should I be potting them up or is it best to leave them be to allow them to grow a bit more. At the moment they're fine where they are but in a few weeks when I start to plant my bedding plants they'll be in the way but it would be nice to keep a few.

Dreaded vine weevil

Hi Bamboogie

I've no idea how old the plant is but I bought the plant last year and planted it in ericaceous compost as advised by someone on the forum.

Dreaded vine weevil

I noticed just now that the new growth on my Acer Katsura is dying (it's in a pot) and after closer inspection saw the dreaded vine weevil in the soil. There is still some good looking growth so will I be able to save it if I repot it completely in fresh compost? If so do I cut off all the dying growth to help aid it's recovery?

I emptied some infested pots last week and laid out the compost on a big sheet so the birds could eat the pesky little nuisances. There are so signs of any grubs now so is it ok to throw that compost on the borders rather than waste it?

And Yes I WILL be going out today to buy some vine weevil killer to treat all my pots!

Agapanthus versus Dandelion

Posted: 30/03/2014 at 19:06

After sorting out my pots today I noticed and big dandelion right in the middle of my agapanthus. I tried easing it out but it's not budging.

In the past when this has happened I have put a plastic bag over the weed and carefully sprayed it with weed killer (the one that goes straight to the root but the name escapes me at the minute) then tied the bag securely around the weed and hey presto after a while the weed is dead! However I have never done this with my pots.

Do you think it would work or am I risking loosing the plant too? Any other suggestions would be gratefully received. Thank you

Should I re pot or not?

Thank you Dove. Yes I know to use ericaceous compost...that's the reason they're in pots

Should I re pot or not?

I have Azalea, Camellia, Rhododendron and pieris all in pots. They're all quite healthy looking but they're getting a bit big for their pots. Is now a good time to re pot them or should I wait till spring?
