How to plant Begonias

Posted: 28/03/2013 at 13:53

I've bought some begonia tubers and some of them have started to sprout shoots, albeit only a very little.

I want them in hanging baskets so is it ok to plant them in the baskets now and keep them indoors until all risk of frost has gone?

How deep do I plant them?

Will it harm the new shoots if they are planted too deeply?

Many thanks

Morning all and thank you for your congratulations...yes 31 years is a long time. My friend actually said yesterday that I should be up for parole soon  and my husband calls it 31 years of wedded endurance  Anyway we spent the day in Liverpool and went to our favourite Italian for dinner which was lovely.

Just been out to put the recycling bin out and it's frozen solid out there this morning. It's looking pretty bright though so hopefully the sun will have chance to defrost my car in time for me to go shopping.

Catch up with you all later & enjoy your day what ever you're doing

Morning all gosh you've been a chatty lot.  I've just spent 10mins catching up with you all.

It's a bit cloudy here this morning but I can see the sun is trying so hard to say hello.

It's our 31st wedding anniversary today & OH has taken the day off (doesn't happen often so I'm honoured) so we're going out for the day. Not sure where yet but where ever we end up will be lovely.

Enjoy your day everyone & I look forward to catching up with you all later

Tomato seedlings

My tomatoes have germinated over the past couple of days. Do I take the cover off them now?

Thank you all for your advice and I've done the thumb test today and there's still signs of life in all of them....Phew what a relief!

Brumbull I'll give dipping a go. Does it only work on Fuchsias?

Joe4eyes No I didn't wrap the pots but I'll do it next winter as I reckon I've been lucky this year.

What a good idea to take cuttings. I never thought of that...Doh I'm not blonde for nothing you know

Woo2 & GG...my interview (well more of a formality really) was fine thanks. Don't know why I got my self all flustered about it because I have volunteered for the charity before and know the lady very well so it was more of an "oh we were so pleased to hear you wanted to come back and when you start" type of interview

Ssshhhh don't mention vine weevilkiller with-in ear shot of my husband...believe me you wont like him when he's angry! I made a ridiculously stupid  stupid, stupid, mistake with the stuff last year which resulted in the loss of quite a few of his Koi.

But no I haven't checked for the 'orrible little blighters but will do asap.

They are in a sheltered spot all huddled together in a corner between the house and conservatory and they're in about 10-12inch pots.

And oh Lyn I'm quite worried now after you saying you couldn't leave your Annabelle outside

All that said the fuchsias I have had planted in the garden and have been there for years aren't even showing any signs of life yet either and they have both survived worse winters that this so perhaps all isn't lost just yet

I have 4 Fuschias all in pots, Baby blue eyes, Annabelle, Alice Hoffman and Shrimp Cocktail none of which are showing any signs of growth yet. I believe they are all hardy and was wondering if I should be cutting them back hard or not?

Swiss Sue I saw the cat deterant you are suggesting yesterday and I'm definately going to give it a go. I'm fed up with the local cats using my garden as a tiolet.
