Monty's white garden

Posted: 04/08/2013 at 08:47

Thanks Aliesh.  I bought some seeds at beginning of season, didn't do anything with them and was wondering when to.  I'm making a note now to sow them next month.  Can they be sown in trays/pots and planted out next spring?  Other than poppies I have never had any success direct sowing.

Can someone help identify what this "bee" / bug this is?

Only a guess but could it be a type of parasitic wasp?

Bird Seed Problems

Posted: 23/07/2013 at 22:22

I vow I will never give birds niger seeds ever again!  six months on I'm still digging the stuff out of the garden.  It is a complete nightmare and I still get goldfinches with the food they are getting now.  I did think about getting a feeder with a tray attachment but they are so expensive I thought again.

Double Poppies

This is our first summer in our new home.  The previous owners obviously sowed some double 'peony?' poppies.  They are absolutely beautiful, can't stop admiring them, and I wonder if it's possible to collect the seed from this variety so that I can grow them next year or will I have to purchase them?  I have only seen pictures matching my variety on American websites and haven't seen them for sale by any UK companies.  Any suggestions gratefully received.

Problems with sweet peas

I am growing Lord Nelson (part of Sarah Raven's Venetian Mix)  and have had very varied results.  Some flowers are on stems 10-12 inches long whilst others are barely 3 inches.  I have also found that some plants are climbing well whilst others aren't very tall at all.  They were all sown and planted out at the same time.  Does anyone have any ideas what I might have done wrong?  Overall I'm really pleased with the picked flowers, they are beautiful, especially since this is the first time I've had a garden with the right conditions for growing them.

Acidanthera Murielae

I am growing these for the first time this year.  No signs of flower spikes yet.  I thought I read somewhere about feeding them but now can't remember where I saw it, although maybe I imagined it!  Can anyone help please, they should look so beautiful if they flower so I'd hate to mess it up and miss out this year.

Romanesco cauliflower

I''m growing these for the first time this year.  Sowed them in modules and then planted them out.  The plants themselves look really strong and healthy but no signs of a cauli yet.  Am I likely to be unsuccessful as other growers are obviously ready to harvest? If so I might as well dig them up and use the ground for something else if I'm not going to get anything off them.

Great.  I've got both some nice pink tones wallflowers and lovely white foxgloves so I'll get cracking this weekend.  Thanks very much.

That's fantastic, thank you.  Are there any that you've found don't work or that very much do?

Can anyone help.  I want to sow some biennials for next year but really don't want to direct sow as I never get good results and don't have any areas of bare soil in the right places.  I really want to sow in trays or modules to nurture and grow on for planting in autumn or next spring, will this work.  Any suggestions/help would be gratefully received.
