What's this little cutie?

Posted: 01/08/2014 at 08:30

Oh thanks everyone, that's a great help.  All I know is that it comes up every year in some of the gardens locally and seems hardy here on the south coast.

Brilliant, now I can have one of my own!

This is a perennial that I've seen locally - I think it's rather sweet but I don't know what it is - anyone?

Green soup in my barrel pond

Posted: 26/05/2014 at 11:35

Re-activating this thread as we've had the builders in and I had to empty the barrel because it was in the way.  So now I'm going to restart my little pond - I have a water lily and a couple of irises which are going to just have their feet in the water.

I may reposition the whole thing so that it's not in full sun but what's best - a little sun at certain times of day, or no direct sun, perhaps just a well lit area?  I could put it in a spot that gets later afternoon and evening sun.  I don't want to make the same mistake again - the water lily has a bit of blanket weed on the stems so I want to get rid of that obviously.

Bumble Bees

Posted: 26/05/2014 at 11:23

We had bumble bees nesting in one of our compost bins last year and we were very happy to have them.

However a few years ago, a swarm of honey bees set up home in the wall cavity, getting in through an air brick and we were instructed to kill them!  I was distraught to say the least, I love bees!

Blanket Weed and Water Soldiers

I've got blanket weed wrapped around the stems of the little water lily that I have - it's a real nightmare to remove!

I'll never understand why people are so mean about Monty... his advice hasn't let me down thus far, and he's an inoffensive, gentle sort of chap. Makes a pleasant change to the noisy hedonism of other beeb presenters such as Clarkson and Paxman et all.

I agree, he is a very laid back and calm presenter and, as you say, inoffensive.  I was a great fan of Alan when he was just a gardener but I won't watch his chat show - ugh!

As for Carol, I love it when she tours the pavilion because she seems to know just about everyone there and it's quite nice to have some natural banter going on.

This is an amazing plant, although there are no new buds, the flowers still look as fresh as they did back in March!!

Thanks for both replies.

@fidgetbones - cheers but I don't plan on spending that much yet.

@ Jimmmy - I'm surprised to read about your problems, I've been using them for years and have always received good quality plants.

It's probably on here somewhere, but is there a discount code for Thompson and Morgan and is it only for subscribers to the mag?
