What's wrong with my Hebe

Posted: 14/09/2014 at 18:48

Ah, the dreaded vine weevil - I'd forgotten about them, thanks for reminding me.   All is well as far as water etc is concerned so we've lifted it and put it in a large pot for now.

Actually, I used this one -

I'll let you know how I get on.

What's wrong with my Hebe

Posted: 14/09/2014 at 11:40

We dug out a new flower bed a few months ago - it once was the home of an ancient Forsythia hedge.  Anyway, we decided to put a Hebe Midsummer Beauty in and up until recently it was doing very well.  Lately, it has started to wilt in places and looks very poorly, I thought it was lack of water but now I'm not so sure.

Any ideas?

I always thought this Hebe was relatively robust and we have plenty in the area, we're on chalk with lots of added compost.  We mulched it with bark, could that be leaching something into the ground?

What's this little cutie?

Oh thanks everyone, that's a great help.  All I know is that it comes up every year in some of the gardens locally and seems hardy here on the south coast.

Brilliant, now I can have one of my own!

This is a perennial that I've seen locally - I think it's rather sweet but I don't know what it is - anyone?

Green soup in my barrel pond

Posted: 26/05/2014 at 11:35

Re-activating this thread as we've had the builders in and I had to empty the barrel because it was in the way.  So now I'm going to restart my little pond - I have a water lily and a couple of irises which are going to just have their feet in the water.

I may reposition the whole thing so that it's not in full sun but what's best - a little sun at certain times of day, or no direct sun, perhaps just a well lit area?  I could put it in a spot that gets later afternoon and evening sun.  I don't want to make the same mistake again - the water lily has a bit of blanket weed on the stems so I want to get rid of that obviously.

Bumble Bees

Posted: 26/05/2014 at 11:23

We had bumble bees nesting in one of our compost bins last year and we were very happy to have them.

However a few years ago, a swarm of honey bees set up home in the wall cavity, getting in through an air brick and we were instructed to kill them!  I was distraught to say the least, I love bees!

Blanket Weed and Water Soldiers

I've got blanket weed wrapped around the stems of the little water lily that I have - it's a real nightmare to remove!
