Thank you for all your birthday wishes I couldn't resist christening my new bench by sowing some Cosmos, Tomatoes, cauliflowers and herbs, and potting up some fuchsias; and I'm testing out how early I can get some courgettes (my fav veggie) I've sown a couple of seeds so now to see if the heat brings me any early fruit....Happy Birthday for Saturday Bev - sounds like your girls know what Mum likes, hope your son gets the hints lol glad to read I'm not alone in having a fab OH/family ...off to clean my wellies now......
Oh WOW! I'm a happy woman today....hubby got me the perfect birthday pressies.....a greenhouse heater, a potting bench, tray etc., and a beautiful rose bush (now he's either encouraging me to keep growing and listened to me oohing and ahhing over my gardening catalogue or......his plan is to keep me out in the greenhouse longer lol...) one very happy gardener here (not bragging btw just wanted to share my happy surprise with fellow gardeners
carrot cake....have to disagree I quite like it but courgette cake????YUK! what is that all about:/ that is a vegetable best roasted alongside a juicy leg of lamb...(mouth watering and I've only just finished breakfast:/) I have a sister-in-law who insists on cooking whacky cakes using different root veg and squash:/ we smile....swallow...and decline the second slice.....just a good old victoria sponge or chocolate cake next time plllllleeeeeeease
Have re-potted them today...an inch of grit at the bottom of each pot and no water, just damp compost with a bit of vermiculite mixed in it. Thanks for all your advice
Me and my over-watering thanks Geoff and will do..they're bedding geraniums, scarlet colour...beautiful if I manage to keep them alive
Hi everyone firstly no rants about slugs in this post) I bought some plugs of geraniums about ten days ago and potted them on into 3" pots. I used seed compost No.2 with a mix of vermiculite in it. The lower leaves turned yellow about four days ago and now this morning most have shrivelled up and turned brown...the top of the plants look green and healthy but lower leaves have gone and died on me:/ what have I done wrong??? It's all 20 of the plugs not just a few.........the geranium seeds I've raised myself are great..healthy, a bit smaller than the shop bought ones but alive any idea what I've done to them? (they're in a light position all day in my lounge in front of patio doors).
Seems to be a fairly common problem:/ my local gardening club are rather patronizing to newcomers also. I had a lovely elderly couple living next door for years but sadly both have passed away and been replaced with neighbours who lock themselves away and the garden that was once beautiful with flowers, fruit and veg is now like Steptoes yard and I'm sadly not exaggerating the old fella was a mine of wisdom but I can't remember all his tips:/ so it's plod on, learn through mistakes and look on this great site and talk to you lovely helpful fellow gardeners for tips and advice
ah I nearly threw mine away too, they were tucked inside all the leaflets stuck in an envelope:/ I bought some last week too
I've just ordered the small pack which covers 40square metres for approximately six weeks; they cost £9.25 plus p&p which came to £11.25. It does say to re-do after six weeks to get the maximum benefit but I'll wait and see as Verdun said they are naturally in the soil anyway and this gives them a boost....hoping it may be enough of a boost to stop the cycle...probably a bit too hopeful of me but who knows I spent hours every evening last year bashing the slimy little critters and will do again but I'd rather spend the time enjoying my garden
I did thank you Sotongeoff...I printed off the cabbage wars and pinned it in my greenhouse...makes me smile
