Nematodes...every slugs enemy:)

Posted: 23/02/2013 at 19:30

I've just ordered the small pack which covers 40square metres for approximately six weeks; they cost £9.25 plus p&p which came to £11.25. It does say to re-do after six weeks to get the maximum benefit but I'll wait and see as Verdun said they are naturally in the soil anyway and this gives them a boost....hoping it may be enough of a boost to stop the cycle...probably a bit too hopeful of me but who knows I spent hours every evening last year bashing the slimy little critters and will do again but I'd rather spend the time enjoying my garden

Okay thank you...I've ordered them but they're not delivered until March so hopefully the soil will have warmed because I'm impatient to get the little critters all my hard work last year and all i had to show was fat slugs roaming my garden...and I swear they were smirking!

clay soil so little choice of plants

Posted: 23/02/2013 at 16:44

I had heavy clay soil mixed with chalk in some parts:/nightmare! we sectioned of areas, put in some raised beds and improved the soil with compost manure, sand, whatever we could think of and now two years later its alot better; not perfect but definitely workable. In the meantime I used pots scattered around to put splashes of colour...fuchsias seem to thrive here but I can't get Foxgloves to stay and the roses struggle so I dug them up and put them in large pots last Autumn...waiting to see if they're better this Summer.....roll on the sunshine I say

I've been looking into giving Nematodes a go this Spring and was just wondering if after applying them I can sow my veg/salad crops in the beds.....it says they're animal, wildlife and children friendly but no-where can I find whether its safe to plant veg etc., after treatment:/ Hope someone out there can help me I feel a victory (albeit a pricey victory) coming on hehe.....

Tucked in a little village called Findon I'm between Cissbury Ring and Chanctonbury Ring; about 10 miles west of Brighton....bitterly cold wind again today. I live in a cottage with so many draughts its like sitting outside some days....brrrr!

Talkback: Slugs

black slugs I was told to leave alone as they eat the others and do little damage to your plants. I lost 90% of my veg to the slimy critters last year and won't be this year...I've been out today and walloped the little so and so's whilst they were sleeping hehe I've tried the copper tape round pots and it didn't work; I'm sure they climbed the geraniums and launched themselves onto the petunias for a big meal time...most were gone by the morning! I'm tempted to try nematodes this year as last year we tried so many methods to no avail. Luckily I didn't find any in the greenhouse

okay so I've put them in the greenhouse and will keep them there for approx ten days then plant in the ground, I'm sure we'll get plenty of frosts here:/ we usually do - my bones are telling me the cold has no intention of going away yet I've just cleaned the greenhouse out, washed it all etc., now I feel shattered...brain willing, the body kicks off..oh to live in a warm climate thank you for all the advice everyone)
