Talkback: Cabbage white caterpillars

I'm going to try planting tons of nastursiums in the  hope that they'll freely decimate them and leave my brassicas alone.  Otherwise I may have to give up on them also.  Nothing worse than having pests munch your carefully nurtured plants.  I've already lost a few cabbages to slugs

Talkback: Sowing seeds

I too have bought some asparagus crowns & some rhubarb & haven't got my ground ready, as it's so full of stone & boulder that it's taking forever to clear it.  I wanted to plant them in a container this year & then plant them out when the ground is ready, but I know rhubarb for one doesn't like to be moved when it's established.  I don't really have a choice at the moment, I'll just have to go for it, but any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

Do a search on Amazon for second hand books, or TKmax, I picked up Green Gardening & The RHS Encylopedia there for less than £20 for the two.  Have to say though, I've taped every episode of Gardener's World & keep them for over the winter months & rewatch them all before I ditch them.  Between that and the magazine I've learned buckets & if you just put in to practice a few things you've learned every season you'll soon be an expert yourself!

Talkback: Growing onions: seeds versus sets

Posted: 11/01/2012 at 13:31

I planted sets last spring, and they were very late to harvest, in the end I lifted them toward the end of October as I was afraid they'd get hit with the cold snap that was forcast.  They were a great success.  I planted Elisa Craig seeds in modular trays in the autumn & they're overwintering on my front porch where it's sheltered & I'll plant them on when I've ground ready & I'll also put down some sets in the spring and compare results.

Talkback: Gardeners' World Magazine Seed Club

When I saw the title 'Seed Club' I thought it would be a place where gardeners would be able to swap seeds? Catherine
