clematis recommendation please

Posted: 08/08/2014 at 21:53

Hi, I recently cut back an overgrown/twiggy honeysuckle and put a trellis in to cover the gappy fence. I cut the honeysuckle down to the ground and hoped it would grow nice and fresh from the bottom. It did, and looked lovely for a few weeks, before suddenly going all twiggy again, with the only green bits being over the top of the trellis, hanging out of the garden and unseen. So I've cut it back again and am goping to replace it with a clematis.

I'd like recommendations for a suitable one please! It's a west-facing spot, pretty sheltered. The trellis is about 4ft high by 6ft wide, so I'd like a small/slow growing clematis which can be trained in to the trellis and will deliver lots of bang for its buck in terms of flowers over what is quite a small area.

Over to you!

You may notice rather a lot of  seemingly randomly-placed plant supports in this bed (below). They were placed there after I ended up replanting the same geranium and hebe 3 times, after the new puppy decided he would like to "help" in the garden  Now every planting out is defended with sharp objects, and I keep a close eye on him (he can be very stealthy when he wants to be though!).

He also sneaks up and grabs the empty plant pots when I plant things out, and gallivants around the garden with them on his nose
And he's fallen in the pond 3 times to date, so the poor frogs aren't too keen on him either!

Not from my garden this time, but from a NT property I visited today. So perhaps a bit more exotic?

Looking for an unusual sized shed - 3ft x 4ft

When we were looking for an unusual-sized shed we got a quote from this place http://www.shedsdirectdevon.co.uk/ they were really helpful and their prices were reasonable (and we went in person as they are local, so saw some of the sheds built and they looked very good quality)

I made blackberry and plum vodka last year - made quite a few bottles and gave it away for xmas presents. It went down very well

too many plums?

This is a typical view on our plum tree - not sure whether to be or at there being soooo many. Should I be thinning them out? And if so, how/when? n.b. last year (our first year here) there wasn't such a good crop as it was so dry and the garden had been untended. I pruned in the summer and obviously this spring has been better for fruit formation. But perhaps too good?
