I just think they waste so much money in destroying things on Top Gear at least the gardening programmes are creating things. The look on Steve Redgrave's face when he saw what the Top Gear people had done to his garden on one of their specials said it all...

Do it! When we moved house last June I had a large holly in the new front  garden which I really disliked. It dominated, and blocked a lot of light to our living room. I got a tree suregon in to take it out in January.

We are so pleased we took it out. It's really opened up the front garden, revealled a previously-hidden path and various other overshadowed plants,  and made the living room much lighter.

In its place I've put an obelisk made by father-in-law, and am growing morning glory and sweet peas up it this year. Will decide on a shrub to go there in the next year or so, but will be a 3-4ft high one, not a 20ft thing

before (the ivy is the big blobby thing behind the acer in the foreground)

after (you can see where it overshadowed the grass which has died, and also the path)

Ooh what clematis is that Nicky Nicky? It's a lovely colour and actually as I am planning on thinning out the ivy and replacing some of it with a vinca for groundcover, then a clematis would sort of echo the vinca in bigger form up the stump and along the branches?

Any other suggestions for flower-heavy clematis that will wrap nicely around these branches?

ooh where are you Lyn? We're about 5 miles east of Exeter, near Woodbury Common. We regularly go to Dartmoor (our horse is kept at a place between Moretonhampstead and North Bovey)

Thanks! I'm not averse to hard pruning so it'll have to like or lump it as it needs to stay approx 4ft high/wide Eden website says hard pruning works for them and gives lots of flowers, and mine is flowering after it was cut back last summer (was blocking the gate) so fingers crossed I can keep it small and flowering!

These flower things on this woody shrub, about 4 ft tall, have been like this for a couple of weeks. Thought they were going to open out into some fuschia-type thing but perhaps not? And the leaves are not like the fuschia's I've seen. Very thick and leathery.
