I would love to LMR1, but I am new to this area and do not know anyone.

From what I have seen so far, all my neighbours are elderly and/or disabled and seem to have privately hired gardeners come in at random times to do their mowing/weeding.

I suppose I could wander down to the allotments and hand them out there!

Oh I have room for one or two, but I can only buy 10 crowns for £15.99 from my supplier which seems a waste both money and product wise.

Hmm... perhaps not something I can grow then.

Thank you for your fast response.

I have never grown asparagus before and it is something I would love to give a go. I have been six years now on an allotment waiting list and I do not hold out much hope of getting one any time soon but I think I will get some crowns.

I generally buy from one supplier and the smallest pack of crowns they sell is 10. I live in a rental so most of my growing is done in containers... so I have two questions.

Will asparagus grow in a container (I was thinking of a potato or tomato bag) and how much space do they require container/ground or otherwise?

Normally I place ant bait traps out for ants especially by my doors to stop them getting into the kitchen, and even this wet weather has not perturbed them as they are coming in their hundreds and attempting to get into the house!

But, the other day I moved my large terracota pot that contains our carrots and was almost sick with the amount of ants and eggs underneath it!

I quickly stepped out of the greenhouse to stop them crawling on me and went back later, but I was devastated to find the whole greenhouse absolutely swarming with flying ants! I was also sure that two sparrows flew out the open window as I approached so I opened the door and ran back into the house.

Within seconds the sparrows were flying in and out with mouthfuls of ants and I left them too it. Late in the evening I went back to investigate and the greenhouse was more or less clear though the normal ones were still all over my pepper, chilli and basil plants but I left them alone.

I just wondered what other peoples 'ant-experiences' were?

July in the garden!!

I removed all the affected branches after taking the pictures and I have a few 'clean' branches with fruit on that I am keeping my eyes on to see if they too become infected.

The downside of taking on a new garden I suppose.

We have a bajillion of those poppy seeds. We were fortunate enough to have them in our old garden so we saved some then and plan to save them every year... here are a couple more pictures:
