I get it Thomas - you're trying to find reasons to carry on smoking .........  LOL

no.... heheh - but on that topic - I've heard ash is a good fertilizer.. does that include cigarette ash? I figured it would be too full of unpleasant things.

Aphids

I've noticed that they dont like smoke. I'm a smoker and have tried blowing the smoke on the aphids to see if they didnt like it like bees. that seems to get rid of some of them at least... but probably not the best solution...

Asiatic Lilies

Posted: 14/04/2014 at 13:29

My Asiatic lily is definitely coming through now. and some other kind of lily I have planted (not too sure what that one is but seems to be coming up faster and earlier than the asiatic ones). I have noticed some other little shoots coming up with my lillies though - are these new little bulbs? Their shoots look different to the main bulbs but I have them everywhere I have lillies planted and the ones with the asiatic are the same dark red colour as it, and the others the vibrant green they are. Does anyone know if there is anything I need to do for these little shoots? or will they just look after themselves this year?

Mine has been inside for most of its life. still not had much luck with it flowering. and mine has just started to come up again after dying back for the winter. Mine usually looks alright through from when it starts coming up to when it dies back in the winter. Mines in the bathroom which is rather cold most of the time so maybe yours is getting too hot? Not too sure really. I'm pretty amateur at this stuff myself. Sorry I can't help more.

Are these some kind of daisy?

they seem to be some kind of super flower. I had some of that colour too but they gave in over winter unfortunately. very pretty though!

Sunflowers

I think some of mine might have self seeded. got some little shoots coming through in a pot where I planted dwarf sunflowers last year. they are either sunflowers or marigolds (had them in the same pot). I'll try post a pic but I think they look more like sunflower sprouts from when I have planted them in the past. I havent really done anything for them - the pot is just outside my house by the doorstep, when i noticed them coming through I thinned them out a little, replanted some and accidentally snapped a few or pulled their leaves off (I felt so mean and cruel!) but other than that nature seems to be doing the hard work for me!

Lawn full of worm casts - please help!!

There was something about this on Garden Mania (or something like that) on BBC radio Newcastle recently - i think its still on I player - they were talking about some organic solution you can spay on your lawn that has some sulphur in it or something that the worms don't like. thats also supposed to make them go deeper and get rid of the casts.

Asiatic Lilies

I tried some asiatic lillies for the first time last year. I just popped them into the container which was pretty much full of compost. They grew without much attention at all, and looked fab too! cant wait to see them come up again! I think they have just started to poke through the compost ever so slightly now - this is up in Leeds.
