black fly and Green fly

ah that sounds amazing! hate those little things! always chomping on my nasturtiums! Let me know if it works at all! I've started trying to plant just any carniverous plant to try and keep thier numbers down... not too much success with that yet though.

Ivy out of control

I've always loved ivy up the side of buildings, is it ever alright to just let it go a bit mad or does it just damage houses too much?

Viola and pansy seeds

Posted: 10/10/2013 at 13:17

I planted some violas and pansies back in late july or so, maybe a bit later and they are flowering now. I just potted them up outside and let nature take its course (I did water them and that, sometimes a little feed). Hoping they keep going for me.

Overwintering lilies

Last bit of advicer I got about overwintering mine was wait for it to die back and leave it sheltered against a wall or something. First winter for mine so hopefully will go well, they were fantastic this year!

Theft of Patio Planters and Containers

Posted: 08/10/2013 at 13:24

My method has been to balance empty glass bottles upside down against the back of the pots, a makeshift alarm so if anyone tries to take one I can jump out and give them a good old earful! (although it does make you paranoid everytime you hear a glass bottle). Not had any thefts since I set those up.

where are the seeds?

Posted: 08/10/2013 at 13:19

quite a few of my flowers this year have failed to develop seeds. Had some Nasturtiums in Liverpool thta flowered earlier than the ones I have in Leeds, the Liverpool ones have gone crazy with seed, but the ones in Leeds, although still flowering, I've not seen many if any seeds. Mainly seen hoverflies and a couple of bees knocking about. Hoping the seeds will show. My marigolds seem to have done ok though! and the Lupins.

Growing indoors though Aquaponics

In the kind of house I live in that would be fantastic, but i'd probably need a UV light too. (back to back terraces are not light friendly...) but I have had goldfish, and I enjoy having plants around the house, its a win win (from the sound of it). Surely you'd still have to clean the tank now and again though right? if nothing else for the alge on the glass. I've also had problems with water plants introducing pests and disease into my tank.Along with some water snails of some kind too. Probably just a result of my cheap pet shop I used and lack of fish based knowledge.

It also sounds quite expensive and like it would take up quite alot of space.

Just my thoughts, but does sound like a good idea.

flowers or weeds?

Posted: 02/10/2013 at 13:24

Hi all,

This year I keep seeing plants that appear to be weeds of some description, but the butterflys and bees seem to love them! Is it a bad idea to collect seeds from these and pot them up? (some of them seem really pretty too!)

Collecting Nasturtium seeds

Hi all,

collected some seeds off of my nasturtiums today. would I be best to dry them and plant them in spring or throw them straight into a pot now?

I have some foxgloves planted in pots outside, will they be ok to leave out there over winter?
