Peat-free compost

Posted: 18/07/2017 at 15:06

This year, for the first time, I bought and used peat-free compost. It seems okay, plants growing well, but I do have a couple of observations about it.

I find it dries out quicker. The surface especially dries out and seems to make a firm crust. Is this normal for peat-free compost and does everyone else find this?

I was also wondering if peat-free is less nutrient dense than other composts? Is peat-free better for any particular situation or to be avoided for certain plants?

Thanks for reading

Are my chilli plants ready to pot up?

Posted: 18/07/2017 at 13:43

Are my chillies ready to pot up? Currently, they are in 10cm square pots and most are about 30cm tall. The roots aren't exactly bursting out through the drainage holes. Should I move them to a 15cm pot or a 20cm pot next? I've only got some peat free compost, would a different compost be better?

What plant other than Ivy to cover up unsightly lower-middle class concrete bird bath with vulgar inscription on it?

I think this would add a touch of class, He's looking for somewhere to rock up for a few days.

Curled/ crinkle leaves on chillies / sweet peppers

Posted: 12/07/2017 at 14:07

I'm a first time chilli/ sweet pepper grower. A few of my plants seem to have leaves that are curled or crinkles and not fully formed or open. I've got so much to learn. Any ideas?

My mum gave me her Wisteria, that she'd bought from a supermarket. It had been in its small original pot for some time Then I took it off her hands and over wintered it in the green house before repotting it up. I actually have two, the other seems much healthier and grown, while this one hasn't gown as much and the leaves are pale  I'm guessing it's a deficienc. What do you think?

Dahlia no show - did I do something wrong?

I bought a rhubarb crown, from that store and nothing happened. Also had some other disappointing bulbs that were very soft and mushy. On saying this, I had a peony that has grown okay.

You probably did nothing wrong.

Guidance on plant spacing

Posted: 05/07/2017 at 14:35

I have a question on how far apart you space plants. I'm planning a new border and want some general advice.

Most plants come with advice on their spread and how far apart to plant. If it's a permanent fixture, like a tree or shrub, I probably would stick to the guidance. But what about annual bedding plants? I ask this as I've planted some Calendula. It said to space them 30cm apart, but now they look like individual plants and not like the drift that I hoped. Is it with annuals you can place much closer together than advised?

Anyone have/ keep a gardening journal?

Posted: 27/06/2017 at 21:20

Hi,

I'm thinking of starting a gardening journal for myself. Just an A5 exercise book to start with. With a few pages dedicated to each month. I was thinking I need a few headings like this

To do

What is good

Lawn

What is new

Wearther

I've also got a seed tracker sheet to keep with the book.

Just wondered if anyone else has one? And what yours looks like or headings that you found useful. I feel a bit daunted by starting one, but I think it will be helpful in the long run.

Thank you for reading, Tina
