Asparagus

It's had reasonable light and tbh I doubt it would have survived the amount of wind / rain and cold we have had. Even from when I got it, it was spindly and I was unsure how best to support it.

I haven't managed to plant my asparagus out yet - it is now pretty tall and spindly (I guess this is meant to happen) - I know I cut it back after it flowers / seeds.

I would like to plant it out ASAP but I am at a loss as to how I support it... winds have still been quite strong the past week. Do I wait and plant it out when the winds have died down?

Thanks,

=D

Fruit / Wildlife Hedging

Hi,

My deliver of 70 bare-root hedging plants arrived today - which I hope to plant this weekend. However, I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on how best to configure my hedge...

I have bought the following:

  • Blackthorn (25)
  • Elder, Common (15)
  • Cherry Plum (10)
  • Hazel, Common (20)

I want to create a double row using the 'W' format.

Am I best to plant the various types in 'clumps' - ie all the blackthorn, then all the elder etc? Or can I mix them up a bit more to add more colour / interest?

Thanks,

=D

I havent event planted mines yet - weather has been awful.

I think the season is about 4-5 weeks behind... (so I've been told, several times!)

Thanks steephill - I would ideally like like a bigger one, but as i'm on an allotment I can only have 25% of the area as 'structures' which includes, shed etc.

Will have a look on gumtree - I definitely woudl like a polycarb - have you had any experience with them?

Folks,

I have been considering getting a greenhouse for my allotment and have my eye on this LacewingGreenhouse - does anyone have any experience of these products? I was thinking of getting the base as well.

I would like polycarb due to it being on an allotment.

Any advice, options etc would be great.

Is it value for money?

Is it structurally sound / safe? How do polycarbs do in wind etc? Are they good / effective?

Thanks,

Derek

Hi,

I dont think they are from seed - they were bought at a nursery. I would assume 1 year old crowns.

Raised bed technically isnt that deep - 22cm.

Will be adding LOTS of organic matter first.

Cheers,

Derek
