Me Vs Slugs

Posted: 03/07/2015 at 15:11

No one has mentioned the Biological slug deterrent, Nematodes. Bought in powder form, mix with water and spray on the ground when the soil temp reaches 5 degs C in spring. These microscopic bugs seek out and burrow into slugs and then feast on them. Problem solved....

What's the best way to plant a dahlia

Best thing to add to clay soil is some sharp sand and mix it in well. Over time this will create small gaps in the clay structure and allow the roots to penetrate further down into moist soil. Worked for me even if the 50kg bag of sand was rather heavy. That was enough sand for a 5m x 1m border.

Goji berry

Posted: 01/11/2013 at 13:51

I've had a Goji berry plant for the last 2 yrs, plenty of leaves but no fruit as of yet, someone did mention that it doesn't fruit until it's 3rd year so hopefully next year....As for eating them, I've tried the dried ones mixed in with other dried fruit like cranberries and blueberries and they seem to be ok. Maybe an acquired taste ?

I have mine in a pot still but might get it planted out in spring to give the roots space to expand. My garden faces East on an end terrace house so gets a decent amount of sunshine. Roll on next summer.

Talkback: Scale insects

Cheers for the advice, I'll try that this afternoon. Seems they have mainly gone for 1 half of both fuchsias, the other halves are flowering away happily. For now....

Talkback: Scale insects

I'm needing some advice on clearing up a big problem with scale insects. They have attacked my 2 fuchsias which I had carefully overwintered and was nurturing back indoors until the decent weather came. Also they are all over my sweet pepper plants. A neighbour has advised up-rooting the entire plant and dunking them in a weak solution of Jeyes fluid to eradicate them ? Any other advice greatfully accepted.
