Bay Tree on its last legs

Posted: 27/02/2015 at 20:19

I have a baytree which I keep outside my back door.  It is thriving.  It has survived very cold frosts and I have also forgotten to water it and it has dried out completely, but it is still alive.!  Maybe your plant is not a houseplant but needs to be outside?

moving established roses

I am in the process of having a new garden fence put up, which means having to move two fairly old rose bushes.  I have had to dig them up and at the moment they are in tubs filled with water!  They are in the greenhouse now as I have nowhere else to put them.  Will they be ok?  They are already producing new shoots and I don't think I will be ready to replant them for a couple of weeks.  Any advice out there would be welcome.

Talkback: Sparrows

You are lucky to get the birds into your garden and with three cats!  I love listening to the birds, and watching them.  The sparrows inhabit the honeysuckle at the bottom of my garden in the summer and bring the babies to feed from the feeders I have hanging around.  The blackbird is lovely to hear in the morning and late evening, watch out for him.  I always leave cut apples out as they love them.  The starliing is a messy eater and a bit of a bully but great to watch, so I would make the most of them when you can and enjoy their noise!

Lavender

I have 3 lavenders in pots all in full sun and they love it.  I have grown one in a pot next to my back door which got sun in the morning then shade for the rest of the day.  It thrived.  I like Hidcote for its blue and the smell is lovely.

Runner Beans in pots

Thanks for that Dovefromabove, will take on board.  Do you think that mulching with grass cuttings will be any good for keeping the pot damp? The pot is rather large, and hopefully with a few heavy crocks in the base it will keep upright.  I am looking forward to seeing a 'teepee' of beans!

I am planting runner beans (Scarlet Emperor) for the first time in a very large pot.  What would be the best compost for planting.  I have my own garden compost plus multi purpose compost would a mix of these be ok?

Bees have died

Nevermind, they will all be back next summer!  My lavender was covered with honeybees this year, they were a treat to watch.  Even my twin grandsons (aged 3 yrs) were fascinated by them.  They chased a bumble bee around the garden too!

Thanks for that Alan4711. My geraniums are just about holding on!  Always next year to try again.  You have a nice picture of Tenby harbour, lovely part of the world.

Point taken David K but as the gripe about bad manners was on my particular 'thread' what was I to think!  I don't come onto the site as often as I would like to, but I always find it interesting and entertaining when I do.  I am signing off now, so happy gardening to everyone and looking forward to connecting with you all again.

Hi everyone.  First of all I apologise to everyone who has been offended by my not replying promptly, but I do lead a very busy life.  I am not able to sit at my computer for hours on end, so I am sorry in not replying earlier.  I am really a well mannered person, so am disappointed to hear so many barbed remarks for my late response.  Thank you for your advice David K, I will certainly use the spray recommended next summer.  Also thankyou Verdun for your advice.
