Geranium attack!

Posted: 07/09/2013 at 20:10

Point taken David K but as the gripe about bad manners was on my particular 'thread' what was I to think!  I don't come onto the site as often as I would like to, but I always find it interesting and entertaining when I do.  I am signing off now, so happy gardening to everyone and looking forward to connecting with you all again.

Geranium attack!

Hi everyone.  First of all I apologise to everyone who has been offended by my not replying promptly, but I do lead a very busy life.  I am not able to sit at my computer for hours on end, so I am sorry in not replying earlier.  I am really a well mannered person, so am disappointed to hear so many barbed remarks for my late response.  Thank you for your advice David K, I will certainly use the spray recommended next summer.  Also thankyou Verdun for your advice.

Geranium attack!

Can anyone tell me what happened to my geraniums?  I planted up several pots of geraniums this summer and they were looking great.  Then they suddenly started looking a bit miserable.  On further investigation, I noticed the leaves had been eaten away and only stalks remained.  There were tiny black grubs on the leaves and a couple of green caterpillers!  My next door neighbour has cabbages in his garden, so would this be the problem?  I have seen several white cabbage butterflies around, and thought maybe they were laying their eggs on my geraniums too.  Any advice on this please?

outside jasmine

I agree, the leaves are a wrong shape for jasmine.  My jasmine has pointed leaves or 'several sharply pointed leaflets' as my RHS good plant guide says!  It would be interesting to see what the label says as Daintiness suggests.

I have fed mine, but not on a regular basis.  Once it gets going theres no stopping it!  Try cutting it back again then in the spring when the new shoots appear give it a feed.

Jean, is your jasmine growing in full sun? It also likes  a sheltered, frost free position .

If its a hardy jasmine like mine it will lose all its leaves in winter and look very sad!  Mine has a lovely perfume in the summer evenings so worth the wait for new shoots and leaves and pretty white flowers. It does go a bit wild so needs to be cut back at the end of the summer.

Olive tree advice needed

Posted: 22/09/2012 at 10:42

I have an olive tree which is in a pot and have had for several years.  It is quite slow growing and has produced olives but very small.  I don't cut off the olives but just let them  drop off naturally.  I over winter the tree in my greenhouse which is unheated and so far it has survived! You should certainly take the trees inside if possible over winter or use fleece as you say.  I would think your shed would be o.k as the tree would have stopped growing and producing new leaves.  The important thing is to keep it sheltered from frost especially as our winters are unpredictable. I did leave my tree out one winter and it lost a number of branches.  Anyway good luck with them as they are lovely trees to grow.

Autumn Sowing Sweet Peas

Just to say I have sweetpeas growing in a large pot and scrambling up a trellis and these were planted in the spring, and they are doing very well.  I do keep cutting off the old flowers before the seed pods develop so I think that helps.   Can't remember what the variety is called, but they have a lovely perfume, I will be planting more next spring.
