Disposal of large garden hedges

Just a question, but why are you taking down hedges at this time of year, when it is the nesting season?

If you had done it in the Autumn/Winter you could have sold the logs.

Rubber chippings

Rubber chips are usually used for riding surfaces where you want an all-weather surface. Are they actually meant to be used in gardens?

They are made of chopped up tyres.

Tips on planting hazel trees?

Chris, hazel can be cut flush with the soil. It will then grow up again. By all means cut it at 6 foot, but it may look very odd. Ugly even.

Growing potatoes

When potatoes flower it usually means that there will be usable potatoes underneath. Check by gently searching around with your fingers.

Do not cut anything off the plants it is neither necessary or advisable.

Organic weedkiller?

Organic weedkiller is not possible. Even vinegar is not organic, it is acetic acid.

Strawberries

Squirrels too, but the little b*****s pull off all the green ones, find they are unripe and chuck them away; and so it goes on until they remove the lot.

Net or lose the lot!

That picture is of the flowers. They come first and fertilize the female flowers which produce the keys.

growing onions

Red onions, I find, are particular susceptible to going to seed (bolting). It usually means the onions have been subject to some sort of stress. Usually lack of water at some time.

Cut off the flower stalk and leave them to continue growing, but use those onions first as they will not store.

As soon as your onions are a usable size, use them straight from the garden. Green leaves and all.
