Years ago we too had families of hedgehogs visiting our garden. Sadly we
never ever see them now, even though we leave "wild" corners in our garden
and have never used slug pellets. I lost count of the number of hedgehogs we
found dying of some sort of poisoning and took to the vet to end their suffering
quickly. The vet said most of them were victims of slug poison and not only
hedghogs but many thrushes and blackbirds were taken to them in the same sad
way. I just think that many people don't realise how lethal pesticides etc. are
in their gardens to the unsuspecting wildlife.

Hi Bookwormy - I am trying to make a wildflower garden too (first time I've
tried it,so I've no idea whether it will work!) I know wildflowers don't like fertilized
soil, but I 've read that they do like finely raked, weedless soil, so I've sown mine
in seed trays to begin with, hoping that this will give them a better start. I hope
this helps you a bit!

Many thanks to you both for your good advice. As this is a new venture
for me I'm really excited about it (and probably a little too impatient!!) We
don't have deer, but I'm hoping that the wildflower garden will be helpful to
bees, butterflies etc. once it gets going! Unfortunately the firm I bought the
seeds from sent them in plain packaging, so all the information I've been
able to find has been on the internet so far. I have since found that cow parsley
seeds take 8 to 10 weeks to germinate - so I have a long wait for those!!
I have sown the five varieties I mentioned in my first post in seed trays, as I
too was worried that something might eat them before they had chance to thrive!

Please could anyone tell me how long the following wildflower seeds take to germinate, as I'm new to all this and haven't a clue how long they will take! Many thanks! Foxgloves Oxeye Daisies Cowslips Cow Parsley Field Scabious
