Two of my yew trees look like they are bleeding from where the trunk splits into two. Is this common I have never seen it before! Should I or my yew trees be worried ?

just been on night watch, slugs crawling up my pots (removed) but not on my beans! there is hope ! PHEW

just about to plant my runner beans for the second time! Beer traps worked quite well so adding more plus coffee,grit, night hunting and leaving the intoxicated pile near my log pile. Fingers crossed my hedgehog fancies a midnight tipple and I will be able to "harvest" a bean !

Suggestions for a bit of privacy...

Have you thought of  laurel ? Beautiful evergreen bright green glossy leaves. Blackbirds love to nest in them and the berrys are a favourite with the birds. You can trim to any height and they grow anywhere. good luck with your planting !

Birds

definately first brood of baby blackbirds. Dad will be feeding them on the ground and as the nest was successful mum will probably be back on it for a second brood. Look out for dad flying off with worms in his beak which will mean the second brood are successful and he will have started to feed them as well. Dads start to look quite tatty this time of year! Fruity suet sprinkles will give them a boost if you want to help. Enjoy watching them !

My pond so far

Dont forget to make a shelf incase little mammals fall in. If you add a shallow beach the birds love to bath especially in hot weather. Your pond looks great !

water feature

So simple. Dig a hole put a solid plastic pot or pond liner inside. Put gravel on the bottom and build up one side with stones to make a shallow shelf (incase a little mammal comes for a drink and falls in) A couple of marginal plants on the shelf and some oxegenating weed. If you want some movement there are small solar fountains should do the trick. If you know someone with a pond pinch some of their water after you have filled yours and left it for a few days. After it settles you have a pond !

Mini greehouse slugs

I cover the soil with grit which definately helps,try covering the shelves as well. Just make it unpleasant for little monsters! Good luck !
