Anyone done any gardening today?

  • Cut back 5 penstemons,
  • weeded out two established clumps of crocosmia unfortunately growing through all the other perennials in the border.
  • replanted perennials and mulched with bark chippings.
  • separated a self layered clump of Jasmine from mother plant and planted in another border.
  • general weeding of border
  • feed all hostas chick poo and all alliums BFB
  • planted up sunny border with six clumps of Chives grown from seed two years ago and left in nursery bed (still have seven more clumps)
  • planted out two small shrubs to fill gaps
  • more mulching.

Think that was everything...oh yeah, I sacked the tea boy who only brought me one cup all day although he did visit thrice

I've just finished another shift in the garden 8am-4pm

I tell you, they don't pay us gardeners enough I'm ever so slightly achy

Got a whole lot done in the purple and white garden though, so I am very happy. Will list details on other thread if anyone is remotely interested...gorgeous sunny day all day here, everything is going crazy in my garden now, especially pleased with my climbing roses which I trained along my fences last autumn and this spring, the strictest I've ever been with them and they are rewarding me with flowering shoots the entire length like rows of little soldiers

Can't wait to see that happen this summer

Lovely aspect with retaining wall plus terracing down those stairs

Good luck

Bare roots perennials - can I put them straight in the border?

These plants are a bit hit and miss since they cannot be checked after packing. Theoretically they are snug as a bug but it depends on healthy roots and at least one bud from which to grow.

I purposefully bought 15 Echinecea in January knowing there would be an element of fail. So far, mine have a survival rate of about 11, so I've lost a third so far and that's wrapping them in cotton wool

Planting out will probably incur more loss but no gardener can force a bunch of roots to grow if there's no bud or eye on them

Good luck
