What is this that has invaded and destroyed my erysimum...?

Posted: 28/02/2016 at 15:59

Does anyone know what this plant / moss is that has completely invaded my erysimum and weakened them to the point that they pretty much fell out of the ground?

The erysimum were fairly young plants but well established and over wintered well.....

Thanks Dave, I was thinking along those lines. Is it usual for them to flower at this time of year do you know?

Agapanthus flowering....?!

Posted: 01/01/2016 at 13:52

I have just been for a wander round my garden to identify jobs that need doing and check up on my hellebores, and have found that my agapanthus is budding!

This is not something that I have experienced at this time of year before

They are planted and well established in beds, so cant be brought under cover. Any idea how I can protect them from the upcoming frosts?

Many thanks.

Phormium advice please

Posted: 16/10/2014 at 09:02

I was wondering if phormiums can be split and if now is an ok time of year to do it...?

I have two gorgeous phormiums about four years old but they are huge now and I can see in their bases that they appear to be made up almost of separate plants already.

Is it too wet to try and split them now?

Also having looked at a couple of other threads about phormiums I see they are meant to flower. Mine have never flowered in the whole time I've had them! Any tips to encourage flowering or reasons why so far they haven't?

Thanks for any advice you may have

Ants nest in my Digitalis

Thanks all. Sorry for delay in responding.

I think they are undermined by the ants.

Can I dig them up, flood the ants out and then replant? I really like where they are positioned in the garden....

Ants nest in my Digitalis

Posted: 02/08/2013 at 17:15

Hi all,

My digitalis was doing splendidly but recently it has started looking rather sorry for itself.

On closer inspection it is teeming with ants who are all over stems and right down in the base of the leaves.

It looks like they may have a nest in there.

I have hosed them off but they return within a short while.

Is this a common problem? Can anything be done that wont wipe out the plant too?

Grateful for any advice.

Right sunflower hearts it is then and when they head back I'll keep my fingers crossed they dont get picked off by a sparrowhawk!

I did wonder about that but I cant recall if I even used a soap and if I did I rinsed it really well.

I've got mixed seed in there but I was thinking of seeing if I could tempt them back with sunflower seeds as they do love them best.

I tried fat balls but the squirels finished them off in a day *sigh*

Maybe another full rinse out and some sunflower seeds will do the trick. What pampered birds!
