Greenhouse heating / winter growing

Posted: 14/01/2013 at 14:14

Hi everyone, apologies if this thread is in the wrong area but I just didn’t know where to put it!

I am a newbie to gardening against many of your folks and I would like to try and use my greenhouse more but dont know really where to start. I would like to start off some seeds for flowers and I have greenhouse heater but so many of the seeds require vast different levels of temperature.....any suggestions. Also do I leave the heater on all the time or for small amounts of time...These questions probably sound pretty daft I’m sure but I have yet to find a book on greenhouse growing that writes everything in easy to understand terms. Would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions on what plants I could start with. Im looking for strong colour and of varying heights and also perennial if possible.

thanks everyone in advance

Yvie, I couldnt agree more, I was unfotrunate enought ot loose my grandparents very young and didnt develop a gardening interest unitl recent...such a shame really. My hubby often talks about watching his 'pops' diggin up the veggie patch and getting him to taste the rewards...I do so wish we saw more of this

Advice from the odlies :)

Just thought id mention how a little old man who lives near me has decided to take me under his wing and try and teach me the "good old ways"...beleive me I need as much help as I can get.  Unfortunatley my family have passed away as have my hubbies and we have no one to ask advice to, other than you lovely people that is.  He saw me trying to plant some rasberry canes and asked if he could help me by giving me some more from his own supply as he had been thinning them out, of course I thankfully said yes...I now have a nice amount of canes and also little bit more knowledge thanks to this man, people are so kind and its such a shame we dont have more oldies (excuse the term) to teach us thier fantastic knowledge. I hope one day I will build up enough to do that same for another budding gardener

I have 2 peace Lilly's and have had them for about 8 years and for some reason they are not thriving at all, the leaves are dying on the tips up to about 1inch into the leaf and they just look very sad! Maybe they have had thier day! May be a silly question but do they have a life span?

Looking for a good gardening group

Posted: 23/04/2012 at 13:37

Hi all, I live in Marlborough, Wiltshire and I am looking for a gardening group to join where I can learn new skills and pick up some good advice.  I am looking for a group that is happy to get new gardeners and not just ones who are old hat at it. I dont want to feel as though I am in a different leage even though I know I am! If anyone knows of a group that they feel would be good for me I would love to hear form you, or eve if anyone is thinking of setting up a group in my area.

Cheerio Yvonne
