Beetroot problems...

Posted: 12/05/2014 at 13:21

I start most of my veg off in modules apart from the one's with a tapering root, in part due to having previously grown in a small space. As you harvest stuff you have something to take it's place which is already part grown.

I've not planted out beetroot yet but have at least forty seedlings ready. I'm being over cautious and watching what other plot holders do. Most seem to sow straight into the ground though, I've not plucked up the courage yet, it looks harder to do than modules and back breaking stuff.

Boltardy is usually fairly hardy, I've not known the leaves go purple but it sounds like they are coming through. Good luck...

Raspberry suckers

Raspberries have shallow roots which grow close to the surface, having just planted some autumn fruiting plants I was advised to put a barrier going into the ground around the bed deep enough so the roots don't pass underneath it. The plant will still produce suckers but hopefully these will come up inside the barrier and remain in the raspberry bed.

The roots don't seem to grow down more than a spade deep ( I've just dug up an area on the allotment full of suckers). Not sure what you could use to make the barrier, I have some roof tiles which I was going to push into the ground length ways.

Growing chilies

Foodie - I must be doing the same thing wrong and have the same problem with peppers, far to small and meger a crop to justify all the time and effort put into growing them. Mine never tasted very nice either... Decided not to grow them this year. Aubergines have taken their place, far easier to grow to a nice size but they need to be started early and need a long growing season.

Chillies seem to fair better and are the size and taste expected. My chillies slowed in growth when put in the GH a few weeks ago. I wouldn't worry too much if yours have slowed or stopped growing the warmer weather will help pick them up and they'll sson be romping away. When potting up just go to the next size pot. Chillies don't like their roots being swamped in a large pot.

Yellowing & dying seedlings

Have there been any cold nights where you live, I left my cues on a garden bench overnight by accident  and the first leaves are similar to your plants but the true leaves are ok, your true leaves look heathly so would have thought they are fine, it may have been to cold in the GH one night.

The compost in the second picture looks alittle dry though, try watering that one but don't over water.

Just checked out the difference between globe and Jerusalem artichokes...and...I won't be growing Jerusalem artichokes. Globe artichokes sound like they can be grown at the back of a flower boarder though.

Tetley - Scented flowers sounds good, I always like to have a vase of flowers indoors for those wet and windy days when you can't get out in the garden.

PoddingtonP - I think I'll be disciplined in going down to the plot for veg and stuff mid week, if need be I'll go after work and keep some wellies in the car. The courgette/squash bed is already prepared.
