Oh no, lily beetles are back!

Think this year I'll cut my losses and cut down the three covered in poo, they are all in the same pot.

Oh no, lily beetles are back!

Lillies are one of my favourite flowers and some of mine this year are covered in poo.

If I missed a year growing them, would the beetles go somewhere else or will they just find another plant to lay their larvae on and return in number the year after.

Help! Grannies are eating my strawberries

Posted: 15/06/2014 at 23:32

I know alot advise putting straw around strawberries, I've only tried it once and found it harboured slugs and snails. It was also a nightmare to pick from around the strawberries as it didn't rot down as quick as I'd liked and weeds grew through it.

Whats eating yoiur strawberries could be under the straw and the wood lice are just coming in later to finish of the fruit.

What's cropping in your veg patch?

Radish, about 4 strawberries, pineberries, spuds, gooseberries, rubarb and swede although this is still quite small. Could probably start to pick onions and shallots but I wanted to leave them longer this year to get to a good size.

Sweet corn problems...

Checked and watered the plants this evening to find another plant is starting to go grey. Sorry didn't say in my first post but the other two seedlings went grey first before going brown.

They weren't hardened off totally in the shade, that area of the garden is in some shade early morning and late afternoon. I could understand them getting burnt if left in the GH but they've been outdoors and although it's been warm, most days have been over cast or it's rained apart from today, which has been sunny and hot.

Sowing parsnips....

Think I'll also leave the parsnips a while longer, I've nothing big enough ready to go out yet. They were dated so will check when sown.

We've had a couple of sunny days so I'm going to check on them this evening and give a good water. Fingers crossed they'll be ok.

Sweet corn problems...

I had 15 healthy seedlings, doing well in the GH and potted them up because it was to early to plant out and their roots were growing through the bottom of the modules.

After a week, due to the recent warm weather, I started to moved them in and out of the GH to harden off. Within 24 hours one seedling turned brown from the centre of it's leaves...it has withered and died. A 2nd one has followed. I've planted the others out on the allotment, they still look healthy but smaller than other's planted out by allotmenteers.

Q is...I'm hoping the two seedlings withered and died due to hardening off...or are the other plants going to wither and die too...due to a virus or other nastie...
