Tomato Growpots, any good?

Posted: 15/03/2013 at 21:58

I think they are on the expensive side and Q why they are being sold off but can see the benefit of using them when growing cucumbers as cues don't like their stems being wet.

I use bottomless pots in the GH for those plants in the bed or in grow bags, ( flower buckets with the bottoms cut out) and water the bed... mainly...only watering the pot if it looks dry or I'm gonna be away for the weekend.

Me thinks it's an expensive gimmick for the lazy gardener who wants to water less frequently... and the downside of this... you go into the GH less frequently and miss pests which can take a hold very quickly..

Where is everybody from...

Just googled avatar, how do you add one. A link to a good site would help

Starting off Dahlia tubers

Posted: 15/03/2013 at 20:58

Why not sow some dahlia seeds as a back up. I was going to start sowing my Dahlia seeds from a seed swap at the end of the month. They flower the same time as plants grown from tubers and you get a huge tuber at the end of the summer.

I just haven't managed to get any tubers to grow the following year after being stored over winter. Hoping for better results this year.

Talkback: Garden seating areas

Posted: 15/03/2013 at 20:37

Bunny. Went back to the local nursery and they had some cheaper log seating in so I bought a two seater, it doesn't have a back but I was planning to place it against the shed and it has two side rests. It's not very chucky either so fits in a treat. Every so pleased it was only £35 and it's light enough to be moved about the garden. Will be treating it with linseed oil this weekend

What's the weather like in your area?

Dull, wet and windy here.

Not sown any toms yet, there hasn't been any room in the propagator. I've taken the cover of the chillies though so should have some room in a couple of days. Seedlings on the window ledge are looking OK.

Disappearing daffodils

I regularly drive past a college/university which has loads of daffs in the grass at the front of the college/university in March/April, this year is no exception all the leaves are appearing...but....they are planted on a hill so presumably it's well drained.

onion sets

I've not planted any sets out in the veg garden yet.

You can start sets off in modules and plant out later. I've started mine in modules, some in the house and some in the GH. The house one's, (red)) started shooting after a week so I've brought in a tray of white. The GH one's aren't showing any shoots.

I've also covered an area in the veg plot with a couple of cloches so some can go out early. Was going to start to harden half the red one's off next week with a view to planting them out under the cloches the week after, depends on the weather.

I've nothing to lose though, if there is a hard frost which kills then, then there'll be enough left to replace any which die.

Please ell me what to do with my summer bulbs!!!

All good advise. I'd been wondering when to plant my gladiolus, nice to know they can be planted anytime now. There are about 40 to 50 bulbs saved from last year, dwarf and tall varieties but all mixed up now, should have labelled them.

Jo/Geoff. Am I right in thinking the smaller bulbs are dwarf gladiolus or can't you tell at this stage. Some are only the size of cherry tomatoes where others are as big as golf balls.

Wet and windy here.

I've been sowing seeds in the kitchen it's been so cold outsideA tab bit disappointed with germination. Twelve chilli Apache seeds sown and only three have come up, sadly going leggy whilst I wait for the others to show. Cayenne just two seeds showing, peppers are no better...

Growing Sweet Peas

David......so pleased with my SP seedlings this year. Kept nipping off extra growth over Winter...grown in the GH, they have had no TLC, not been brought indoors once and nearly all the plants have at least three shoots from one seed...looking really good and healthy...I'm planting as companions along side pea's and beans but any spares will now be planted along side my climbers in a flower bed....when would you advise they can be planted out...
