Your itinerary

RomeDay 1 - Fly to Rome
Arrive at chosen airport to take your flight to Rome. On arrival in Rome a coach will transfer you to your hotel, the four-star superior Church Palace (thechurchpalace.com), located in a Renaissance inspired historic building.

Day 2 - Giardini della Landriana and Ninfa with Monty
A drive south to one of Italy’s most unique gardens, the stunning Giardini della Landriana. Redesigned by British The Church Palace Hotelgarden architect,Russell Page in 1967, the gardens are laid out in a succession of ‘rooms’, which are an inspiration for any gardener. In the afternoon we take a short drive to Ninfa. Set in 260 acres of parkland, the Ninfa landscape is the ruins of a medieval village, with oak, cypresses and poplars among a range of exotic plants from across the globe. Ninfa only permits a small number of visitors each year so this tour is a rare experience. Lucy Hall will be Rome at duskaccompanying both tours, while Monty will be joining the Ninfa tour in the afternoon before the drinks and buffet reception and his talk.

Day 3 - Tivoli
A short distance from Rome lies Tivoli, a hill-top town once favoured by the ancient Romans for its health-giving waters and covered with still visible temples. The town’s finest attraction now is the Villa d’Este, a 16th century papal palace, noted for its gardens. A series of terraces with spectacular fountains, these gardens indicate the luxury once enjoyed by the Papacy. The tour of Villa d’Este will be accompanied by Lucy Hall, followed by lunch in the town of Tivoli. This afternoon we visit the Emperor Hadrian’s amazing villa dating from 120- 130AD. There are the ruins of a Greek library and theatre and a stone panelled, self-supporting dome which later inspired St Paul’s and Paris’ Pantheon. We have a tour of this outstanding villa before returning to our hotel.

Day 4 - Guided tour of Rome
A fascinating guided tour of the ancient remains of Rome, spanning the 500 years when the Roman Empire was at its most powerful. The rest of the day is free to explore at your leisure. You may also wish to join us on an optional visit to the Vatican, home to the Pope and, of course, the famous Sistine Chapel.

Day 5 - Return home
Free time in Rome until transfers to airport for your return flight.
