There is a huge range of ceanothus species, all from California, and even more varieties bred from them. The evergreen kinds tend to be slightly less hardy, but usually thrive with the aid of a warm sheltered wall in mild gardens, where they can be grown as free-standing shrubs. This variety is one of the hardiest, and a popular choice for the middle of a border, or as a groundcover, on light soils even flourishing in partial shade. Plants make shapely mounds and start flowering early in their lives. Annual trimming keeps plants bushy and leafy. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
