Sometimes sold under its English name of 'Silver Feather', this is a towering ornamental grass that stands at around 240cm (8ft) tall. Ideal for the back of the border or as a specimen plant, it comes into its own in late summer when it produces panicles of silvery flowers. These remain looking good throughout the autumn and winter, becoming white and fluffy with time. Put the plant back to ground level in early spring to make space for the new growth.
