A native of dry Mediterranean scrub, common myrtle is an aromatic evergreen that has been cultivated for centuries. It can be grown in the open garden in mild areas, but elsewhere benefits from the shelter of a warm wall. It may also be grown in a container for moving indoors over winter, otherwise it is unlikely to reach its full potential size. Its sweet-scented flowers, white with a hint of pink, have very long stamens which create a fluffy appearance. The Royal Horticultural Society have given it their prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
