Plant details

With its imposing upright stems, this is an impressive plant that is perfect for the back of the border. In late summer and early autumn, plants bear long racemes of large and colourful, pure deep violet-blue flowers. Also known as monkshood, they will grow to about 90cm. Fully hardy, plants prefer a sunny position but will tolerate some shade, which can enhance the colour of the blooms. They grow best in fertile, well-drained soil and should not be allowed to dry out between waterings. Contact with the foilage may irritate skin; all parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested.
