Plant details
Previously known as cimicifuga, this is a slightly unusual plant, with tall, elegant, upright spires of white flowers late in the season, long after the summer display is over. It is a good plant for the back of a big herbaceous border where it will probably need staking. As an alternative, grow it among trees and shrubs or in light woodland with rich leafy soil. Plants revel in partial shade, where the flowers are sheltered from weather and so last longer than in exposed positions. If slightly supported by surrounding twiggy stems it will not need staking, and will grow into a more natural shape.
