Plant details
Kiwi fruits, or Chinese gooseberries, are vigorous climbers that twine around any available support and can reach a great height, although they are more often trained on horizontal wires on a warm wall and kept pruned to size. The plants are of borderline hardiness, their young flowering shoots often injured by spring frosts, and warm shelter is essential, preferably under glass in very cold gardens. The female plants need a male pollinator, one of these serving to fertilise up to seven fruiting plants. 'Hayward' is a heavy cropper with supreme flavour. Also known as A. chinensis.
