This unusual annual has purplish green leaves, and from summer to autumn, bears tightly packed, red-suffused green flowers that are followed by attractive red-brown or purple seed-heads. The leaves can be eaten like spinach. Sow seeds indoors in early spring and plant out once the danger of frost has passed in May or June.
