A fine evergreen shrubby tree from the west of North America and particularly admired in California where poems have been written in its praise. Green above thy scarlet hose, How thy velvet mantle shows, Never tree like thee arrayed, O thou gallant of the glade! In cultivation it is usually a small tree. It has leathery, shiny green leaves, bears large panicles of small, white, waxen bells which are followed by ornamental scarlet berries.
