Plant details
Arctotis are showy South African daisies that enjoy a good drought. In a hot sunny position on light soil, the silvery-grey bushes will be transformed into a startling show of large 10cm (4in) blooms in a vibrant colour range, from white and cream to bright red, with gold or dark centres. In dull weather and late in the day, they will close, but open again at a touch of sunshine and warmth. They deserve a prominent position and make ideal subjects for containers. Named varieties such as 'Flame', selected from among modern compact hybrids, also make excellent potplants. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
