Plant details
An extraordinary climber, related to some tropical lianas. The vigorous twining stems are almost hidden beneath large heart shaped leaves 15-30cm (6-12in) across. These are at their best early in summer when the curious flowers begin to appear. The flowers look most impressive in close-up photos but in real life are easily overlooked. They have a slightly unpleasant scent, and trap pollinating insects - in tropical species (sometimes grown as greenhouse climbers) this effect is far more pronounced.
