Plant details

This is a beautiful fern that is perfect for lighting up dark areas of the garden. The plant's delicate fronds have a deeply cut, bold shape and are grey-green with touches of silver, burgundy, purple and even turquoise. It's an excellent companion for shade-loving woodland plants and although it is deciduous, its foliage provides a long period of interest for a shady corner. As with most ferns, it thrives best in moist, fertile, neutral to acid soil. To give the plant the best start possible, add lots of well-rotted leaf mould, composted pine needles or garden compost when planting. In colder areas around the UK, it's advisable to protect the crown of the plant in autumn with a dry mulch.
