Plant details

One of several forms of the garden hybrid, 'Irwinii' is a dense evergreen shrub that makes a fine low hedge, screen or windbreak if plants are spaced 45-60cm (18-24in) apart. It is just as fine as a specimen shrub in the middle of a border where its gracefully arching branches can be left untrimmed. Like many berberis species, it is undemanding, tolerating shade and extreme soil conditions (except waterlogged ground), but it performs best in full sun and well-composted soil. Also known as B. irwinii.
