Plant details
Red cabbage is a versatile crop, quite different in flavour and appearance from conventional kinds. There are two main types according to their season of maturity, both kinds yielding very solid heads with few waste leaves and in most cases standing for several weeks without deterioration. Early or summer varieties such as 'Rookie' will crop from July to October, and late or autumn varieties are ready from October to December but will keep in store until late winter. Grow one of each kind for a long season of use. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
