Kohlrabi, Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes, has a crisp but sweet flavour, with a good crunch reminiscent of biting into an apple. The outer skin can be green or purple, but peels away easily to reveal dense white flesh. Use kohlrabi raw – sliced or grated into salads and coleslaws – or stir fried or even roasted. Leaves can be used as greens.
Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes ‘F1 Ballot’ is an early maturing, purple kohlrabi. The flesh is delicate, juicy and crunchy. Despite being early to mature, Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes 'F1 Ballot' stores well, and can be harvested late in the season without becoming 'woody'. This is a vigorous variety, with good resistance to bolting.
