Plant details

This is a clump-forming perennial which is covered in spikes loaded with violet blue flowers from mid- to late summer. Grow in fertile, neutral to alkaline soil in sun or partial shade, though the delicate flower colours are best preserved in shade. After flowering, cut back to prevent self-seeding and to encourage a second, less profuse flush. It has been given an Award of Garden Merit (AGM), which is for plants of outstanding excellence.
