Cirsium rivulare 'Atropurpureum' is an ornamental thistle, bearing incredible, deep crimson thistles  on elegant, long, leafless stems, in contrast with spiny, dark green foliage. It's a wonderful choice for growing towards the back of a sunny herbaceous border, and works well when planted among grasses and other tall perennials.

Grow Cirsium rivulare 'Atropurpureum'  in moist but well-drained soil, in full sun. Cut plants back in autumn to prevent them seld-seeding, or leave them intact to provide a winter source of food for birds. Lift and divide congested clumps in autumn or spring.

A must for any daring purple reddy border,an easy going plant that sends up lush red blooms encased in delicate buds that the bees,butterflies and hoverflies adore! Looks best in a clump,repeat planted.Likes the sun but not too fussy.Dead head to prolong flowering.
