Plant details
Raised in France in 1899, 'Ville de Lyon' is free-flowering variety that blooms from early summer to early autumn. It is best grown through an evergreen shrub to hide its bottom half as the lower foliage tends to go brown and dry by mid-summer.
As with all the late-flowering clematis, pruning is easy. Simply cut back the stems to a pair of strong buds 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground level before growth begins in early spring.
