Plant details
A large, symmetrical, pyramidal tree originally from south-east Europe and Asia Minor that needs plenty of space. It has a single, bolt upright trunk with dark green leaves which flare yellow in autumn. In late-winter, before the leaves appear, the bare framework is covered in 5-8cm-long yellow catkins which yield clusters of edible nuts. It also produces high quality pinkish-brown timber that's commercially. The bark has corky furrows. It has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
